The theme of the exchange of apricot blossom was famously taken up in Lang Shining's Imperial portrait of the Qianlong and Yongzheng Emperors, where the sprig is a symbol of succession and a positive omen for a new reign.
The scene appears to reference the poem A Gift for Fan Ye by Lu Kai: 折花逢驛使，寄與隴頭人。 江南無所有，聊寄一枝春。
which has been translated: A messenger met whilst picking flowers; was then sent on to Longtou. There is not much Jiangnan has to offer, aside from a brief gift of a spring's flowering sprig.
