A figure of a ‘court lady’ seated on a horse The horse standing foursquare, his head turned slightly to the left, with docked tail and ears facing forward, the lady wearing long robes, with one hand clasped to her chest, her face slightly upturned, the hair stylishly arranged into a high bun, with traces of dark pigment. Period: Tang Dynasty (618 - 906); 8th century. Height: 33 cm.
Tomb figures (or mingqi) such as this were buried with the deceased, so that they could attend to them in the afterlife. This elegant courtier, with her round pillowy cheeks, represents the Tang ideal of female beauty. Figures in this style are often referred to as ‘Fat Ladies’.
