A fine dingyao brush washer Of round form, engraved to the exterior with a petal design, the base with the character ‘guan’, meaning ‘official’ on the base, from the Ding kilns, Hebei province. Period: Northern Song (960 - 1127). Height: 6 cm.
There is an almost identical example, dated Northern Song (960 - 1127), in the collection of the British Museum, which is published in Vainker, Chinese Pottery and Porcelain: From Prehistory to the Present, London, BMP, 1991, p.95; fig. 69 (museum number 1947,0712.56). This example, which was found in China and bequeathed to the Museum by Henry J. Oppenheim in 1947, also has the character ‘guan’ inscribed on the base.
