Two blue and white stem cups The deep sides of the body rising to a slightly flared mouth rim, raised on a high spreading foot, painted in shades of underglaze blue, the body decorated with leafy stems and scrolling lotus flowers interspersed with lan?a characters, all above a band of lappets, the foot decorated with jewels issuing from ruyi-heads, the interior with a floral medallion, the inside edge of the foot with a six-character seal mark of Qianlong in underglaze blue. Period: Qing. Height: 10 cm.
There are similar examples of these stem cups in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, published in the Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong Porcelain Ware from from the Qing Dynasty in the National Museum, Taipei 1986, Pl.69.
This form was introduced during the Yuan Dynasty, when China was under Mongol rule. The form was inspired by Tibetan butter lamps, or chang ming deng. This shape began to appear in ceramic wares during this time.
