A pair of impressive chargers Of circular form, decorated in cama?eu rose enamel, the central medallion with a scene of a barefoot fisherman next to an old tree, a pair of ducks flying overhead, with hills and small buildings in the distance, the rim with an intricate design of four birds with outstretched wings, alternating with a border of tile-pattern cartouches all linked by swags of flowers and further flowering branches, the bases glazed. Period: early Qianlong (1736?1795). Diameter: 35.5 cm.
In a seminal work on European design on Chinese porcelain, La Porcelain des Compagnies des Indes; a Decor Occidental, by Francois et Nicole Hervouet Yves Bruneau, two small plates of this design, both attributed c. 1750, are illustrated (plates 3.9 and 3.10). A further plate, decorated in polychrome enamels, is dated 1740 in the same publication (plate 3.8). The decoration is copied from an engraving by C. J. Visscher, following a drawing by Abraham Bloemaert. The design on the present charger follows closely to the original drawing (see D. F. Lunsingh Schdeurleer, Chinese Export Porcelain, pp. 207). This design is known to have been produced en grisaille and in famille rose, and in exceptional cases in polychrome enamels. There are also known Delft examples of this design.
