Brass with inlaid silver. The back with inscriptions. Period: 16th century. Height: 25 cm.
In Jain belief, a tirthankara (or ‘ford-maker’) helps followers attain enlightenment by creating a fordable passage through the sea of samsara. Mahavira (born in the 6th or 5th century B.C.E.) was the twenty fourth and last tirthankara of Jainism, here shown with the twenty three tirthankaras who came before him.
