A superb gilt splashed bronze incense burner Of compressed globular form, with two upright loop handles, raised on three short tapering feet, the body embellished with irregular gilt splashes, the base cast with an apocryphal two-character Xuande seal mark within a recessed cartouche. Period: 17th/18th century. Height: 11.5 cm.
The origin of gold-splashed bronze vessels is a subject of discussion. Gerard Tsang and Hugh Moss in Arts from the Scholar’s Studio, Hong Kong, 1986, p. 184, posit that the treatment of this surface decoration was copied from the Xuande bronzes of the Ming dynasty where the appearance of the gold splashes was caused by uneven surface patination. Some scholars have also thought that perhaps the gold-splashed decoration on bronzes is associated with qingbai and Longquan wares of the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties.
