A blue and white Swatow charger Of circular form, decorated in shades of underglaze blue, the roundel painted with a crane perching on the branch of peony with two large blooms issuing from a rock, surrounded by leafy scrolls, the rim with a border of quatrefoil cartouches containing flowers set against a diaper pattern ground, the back glazed, with a light blue line, the base with paper attached. Period: early 17th century. Diameter: 47 cm.The script on the paper reads: ‘Captured at the destruction of Fort Abdul Khel near Jalalabad on the 21st May, 1880.?See journal of above date. C.” (gr?nsf?stning i Afghanistan utanf?r Kabul).?The name ‘Swatow’ refers to the port of Shantou in the Southern Chinese province of Guangdong, or Swatow in the historical Dutch records.
