PROVENANCE: The painting is a present from Zhang Daqian to Mr. Hui Yihan in late 70s. Mr. Hui worked as a director at Radio Taiwan International and he often organized many Beijing Opera performances. Being a big fan of Beijing Opera, Zhang Daqian gradually became friends with Mr. Hui. It was not until twenty years the descendants of Mr. Hui brought the painting to the United States and they always kept it in the family. This is the first time the painting has been offered to the public.
Mr. Hui is a descendant of Qing manju. His grandfather was a minister of Internal Affairs in Qing dynasty. His father Hui Xiaotong (1902-1979) was a famous painter. The legendary consort Zhen was Mr. Hui’s aunt.
The painting is inscribed by Xiao Ping, a well-known painter and connoisseur of Chinese painting.
