Beauty Of The Beast:
Among Erte's Sources of inspiration ere the fables and myths he learned as a child in Russia. One of the most pervasive of these concerns the beautiful woman and the fearsome beast who is turned into a handsome prince by the beauty's kindness. Erte' interpreted the tale in a graphic image of spectacular imagination and theatricality. In this work which appeared first as the cover design on the February 1923 issue of Harper's Bazaar, the beast is subsumed into the beauty's costume-and she becomes "Beauty of The Beast". The artist wrote, "A dream is like this young woman, bedecked in feathers, as elusive and mysterious as an exotic bird. Reality is symbolized by the skin of this wild beast which embraces her form." The Bazaar cover was the basis for the jewelry designs in this group, as well as for the later serigraph, perhaps Erte's most popular print, which was used on the jacket of Erte' at Ninety.
