A splendid 1882 oil on canvas Seascape painting by the well listed American painter Frank Knox Morton Rehn (1848-1914) most likely near or around the Cape Ann coastal beaches where Rehn began summering and painting with Childe Hassam, John Twachtmann and William Merritt Chase beginning in 1891.
It features a rough sea with tall waves crashing into shore and a rocky outcropping as tall masted ships sail out on the horizon. The painting is signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner. It also states "NY" signifying his permanent address in The Chelsea Hotel in New York City at this time in his career.
The painting has pencil inscription on the reverse signifying "James Hanna & Bros Detroit Mich". This is very significant for Detroit Michigan art collectors as Hanna was the preeminent art dealer, collector, connoisseur and critic around the turn of the century. He most likely owned this painting sometime after 1909 when his firm was re-named James Hanna & Brothers. (as its signed in the stretcher) He was a member of the prestigious Lotus Club in New York City and may have purchased this there or while in New York.
