Japanese Tennin, probably Asuka Era, 7th Century, formerly attached to the canopy in the Kondo Main Hall at Horyuji (Horyuji) Temple in Nara. Parts of lotus petal seat missing, parts of back nimbus missing with small restorations, part of instrument missing, traces of color to very old and dry wood; base new. Height with stand 22 1/4 inches (56.6 cm.). NOTE: Purchased in 1960's in New York City from an antique importer specializing in Japanese architectural works and replaced fragments from old temples in Japan under post-WW2 reconstruction.
