Tibetan 19th century thangka depicting Refuge Tree. The late 19th Century or earlier Thangka depicts the Refuge Field, also referred to as the Field of Accumulation. A vast pantheon of characters are depicted, divided into four main groups: an upper section, composed of serene historical and religious figures, two lateral sections with figures mainly portrayed in ecclesiastical robes, and one, the largest group, supported by a splendid tree trunk that arises out from billowing waters, which hosts various kinds of figures: irate, calm and historical. Of note is the entire group of the Arhat. In the centre of the painting, represented in considerably larger dimensions, is the seated figure of Master Tsoá?-kha-pa (Rje rim-po-che) surrounded by an aureole adorned with blooming peonies. He is accompanied by two lotus flowers that host his distinctive attributes, the flaming sword and a book. The Thangka is hand sewn onto on an embellished silk panel with linen backing in a stylized floral motif, an additional panel of deep gold silk mounted across the top protects the image when rolled up. Good condition. Image measures 30 inches high x 19.8 inches wide, overall measures 40.5 inches high x 25 inches wide.
