Description: Early 20th century, Japan. With the signature of Maeda Chikohu (1872-1950). The body constructed of a loose hemp leaf weave, overlaid by repeating bands of twining (nawa-ami) in graduated widths, finished at the rim with ornamental bamboo twigs, the handle made from a bent bamboo stalk, elegantly wrapped in ornamental knots which descend down each side to the bottom. Signature located on the underside. Note: Maeda Chikuho employed this type of design in a number of globe and ovoid shaped baskets, a style he created and for which he became famous. Chikuho was one of the most important bamboo artists working in the decades prior to WWII, which was known as the Golden Age of Japanese Basketry. This basket was offered at the Fine Asian Works of Art auction by Butterfield & Butterfield, San Francisco, California, sale number 70700, December 13, 1999, as lot number 6283. Basket is accompanied by a copy of the auction catalog and a copy of "Departures Magazine," December 1999 edition, in which the works of Maeda Chikohu are featured. SIZE: 19-1/4" h x 11-1/3" dia.
