Condition:
The paintings are in good condition with slight signs of age and wear. Partly creases and small spots are visible. The total dimensions in the farme are 114 x 51 cm and 132 x 58 cm.
Quail
The quail is admired in China because of its fighting spirit and symbolizes a specific official’s rank. However small and plump, is identified with grace and peace. Two quails are accordingly ‘abundance and peace’. Already the Emperor Yongzheng commissioned porcelain with nine quails, a symbol of eternal peace, and a phoenix. It is considered as a symbol for ‘long and continuous country’. Quails in combination with chrysanthemums symbolize ‘living together in peace’; quails and standing grain represent ‘peace and harmony’.
Monkey
The monkey is one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac and has an important role in Chinese art and folklore. It is associated with intelligence, is thought to be smart, clever, kind but also disrespectful. Numerous legends and stories include the monkey. The most famous legend is about Sun Wukong, ‘The Journey to the West’. In this story one tale is about the ‘King of the Apes’, in which the monk Xuanzang tries to procure the scriptures of Buddha from India for the emperor. The monkey is also frequently depicted with a peach, on horseback or with bees.
