Lacquered cabinets-on-stands were first imported to Europe by the East India companies in the 17th century. They were mostly decorated with gilt chinoiserie on purple, red or black lacquered grounds and mounted in silver, copper or brass. Oriental cabinets were usually delivered without stands as these were manufactured in England, the Netherlands and Germany in the Baroque style. The decoration of offered cabinet-on-stand reflects the mix of sources, from which the exuberant design of the Azuchi-Momoyama period evolved. The cabinet was probably produced by craftsmen from Kyoto, but the decoration is in the style ofhorror vacui- a means of design, which is alien to the traditional Japanese art and was introduced from Europe. The magnificent decor combinesmaki-e (scattered gold dust) with mother-of-pearl works and bands of geometric decoration.
Offered cabinet-on-stand illustrates the European taste for the exotic, which had an impact on Japanese art from about 1570 to 1630, as the trade had been extended from Spain to India, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and China to the far eastern regions of Korea, the Ryukyu Islands and South China.
