UTAGAWA Kunisada/Toyokuni III (1786-1865) 歌川 豊国
Der Künstler UTAGAWA Kunisada, auch Utawaga Toyokuni III genannt, war der popul?rste Zeichner japanischer Farbholzschnitte seiner Zeit. Schon früh entwickelte der Halbweise mit dem eigentlichen Namen Sumida Shōgorō ein gro?es künstlerisches Talent. Toyokuni I (1769-1825), das Oberhaupt der Utagawa-Schule, war beeindruckt von seinen Skizzen und nahm ihn um 1800 als Lehrling in seine Werkstatt auf. Wie üblich, erhielt Sumida Shōgorō dort einen Künstlernamen, der einen Namensteil des Meisters enth?lt – ?Kunisada“, abgeleitet aus dem zweiten Teil des Namens Toyokuni. Er entwickelte einen eigenen Stil, an den sich die übrigen zeitgen?ssischen Künstler orientierten. Kunisadas Produktivit?t war au?erordentlich gro?. Sein Lebenswerk wird auf etwa 20.000 Entwürfe gesch?tzt. Seine Werke zeigen überwiegend Motive aus dem Genre der Kabuki-Illustrationen und der Schauspielerportr?ts. 1844 übernahm Kunisada den Namen seines vormaligen Meisters und wird daher in der heutigen Kunstliteratur als Toyokuni III geführt.
