RYUSAI Shigeharu (1802-1853)
The Osaka-based woodprint artists RYUSAI Shigeharu rate among the representative of the Utagawa school. He published his first print in 1820 under the name of Nagasaki Kunishige. His artist’s name RYUSAI Shigeharu he adopts in 1825, which is a variation on the name of its two teachers Utagawa (Takigawa) Kunihiro and Yanagawa Shigenobu. Shigeharu engaged in a variety fields such as book illustrations, billboards, and programs for theatre but also in the field of painting. Shigeharu gained high profile but above all by his yakusha-e. With the designs for yakusha-e prints Shigeharu gained huge reputation.

Condition:
The woodcut is in very good condition, in print and color with silver pigments. Paper slightly browned. The darker areas of the main sections at their edges are due to an oxidation process and the applied color pigments. All sheets of this print are, because of this process, stronger, sometimes less affected. The print has a dimension of 43.5 x 29 cm
KEIGETSU Kikuchi (1879-1955)
KEIGETSU Kikuchi was born in Nagano under the name Kikuchi Kanji. At the age of 13 he began to study painting with Kodama Katei (1841-1913). In the years before the First World War his works acquired great attention through awards and prestigious exhibitions. He was known for his strict visual language with a preference for line and historical issues. His later works shows scenes of modern life, fairy tales and decorative motives of the bird and flower genre.
