Shortly before his death (1972) Shinsui should give the rights for reproductions of some of his pictorial works in the shape of woodblock prints to the Publisher Shinsui Momose Han. This posthumous prints are not designed for the original woodblock print sheets and do not appear in the woodcut artcatalog raisonné Shinsui. It is also not known how much sheets and in what number of copies they were published. The publishing house has passed only a short time. In 2006 it give ups its activities.
Condition:
The woodcut is in very good condition, in print and color. The sheet has a dimension of c. 50 x 41 cm.
ITO Shinsui (1898-1972)
ITO Shinsui, with original name Hajime, was a Japanese painter and printmaker. He was a pupil of the ukiyo-e artist Kaburagi Kiyokata (1878-1972), won in his early years several awards and presented his works in numerous exhibitions. In 1927 he founded the school Shinsui Gajuku 深水画塾, which was renamed in ‘School of the clear summit’ 朗峯画塾 (Rōhō gajuku) in 1930. In 1948 he created the ‘Ten Views of Shinano’ and ten years later he became a member of the Academy of Arts. In 1970 he also received the Order of the Rising Sun. ITOs works show mainly landscapes, including the classic theme of the ‘Eight Views of Lake Biwa’ and scenes at Borneo, Celebes and Java as well as numerous depictions of beautiful women (bijinga).
