Moulded in the shape of a gourd with an incised stylised flower on the top of the cover.
Provenance: Acquired before 1975. This shape is classical for Qingbai porcelain (see Stacey Pierson, edited by, Qingbai ware: Chinese Porcelain from the Song and Yuan Dynasties, London 2002, pp. 188-189, nn. 102-103); a similar box is in the National Museum of Tokyo (M. Tregear, Song Ceramics, London 1982, p. 22, n. 297), another in the Art Institute of Chicago (inv. 1997.379a-b).
