Description: AN ARCHAIC BRONZE RITUAL TRIPOD WINE VESSEL, JUE, CHINA, LATE SHANG DYNASTY, 12TH - 11TH CENTURY B.C.
The jue in quite good condition, X-ray shows the vessel a visible shaped short Y-crack and a chip re-stuck on top of the body where the handle joint the caps of the body of the vessel and two cracks on the handle, where the handle joint to the body and re-stuck, some patch of malachite encrustation to the decorated sides and some minor blistering to the flat surface, inside some visible mud with traces of path of malachite encrustation.

Supported on three long triangular-section blade-like legs, the U-shaped body terminates in a curved spout flanked by two posts with domed caps, decorated with whorl patterns, and triangular tail. The C form handle is set on one side of the body over a two-character inscription. The body is cast with a frieze of two large taotie masks with protruding eyes and leiwen scroll and quills, one mask is bisected by a vertical flange, and the other by the inscription. The soft greyish-green surface has some malachite encrustation.
