Showa era, circa mid-1950
The high domed lid of the rectangular box made of kanshitsu (dry
powdered lacquer applied over hemp) and decorated in gold and
iro-e todidashi maki-e with the Nikko temple compound set against
a large wooded hill of kawari nuri reserved on a roiro ground, the
underside of the lid with a raised dark bronze design of a waterfall
cascading over rocky cliffs; the lower section of similar coloration and
composed of solid lacquer sculpted as a hillside inhabited by three
monkeys; fitted with a bronze water dropper (suiteki) in the form of a
hut above an inset duan inkstone carved with sunken relief dragon
curled around an inlaid oval, its perimeter with inscriptions in archaic
and semi-cursive Chinese; the recess for the inkstone of sparse
nashiji and signed Koshi (some wear).
