A rare silver George III samovar

Mark of Nathaniel Smith & Co. (work period 1781 – 1808)
The large urn-shaped and partly fluted samovar, standing on four legs ending in claw feet connected to a square-shaped base standing on bun-feet, the upper body with a band engraved with scrolling strawberries and roundels with floral motifs, the side with two lion head ring handles and corded rims, the domed partly fluted cover set with a ball finial.

The firm Nathaniel Smith & Co. registered its first mark at the Sheffield Assay Office on 10 August 1780 under the names “Natan. Smith, Geo, Smith & James Creswick” as “Plateworkers, Winegate”. Nathaniel Smith had earlier been a partner of the Sheffield silversmith Richard Morton. A trade catalogue issued by the firm around 1800 includes ten pages devoted to inkstands.
