Of rectangular form with out-turned rim, decorated with acanthus leaves flanking shells. The deep lobed bowl raised on four shell shaped supports.

Catalogue Note:
Jean George Grebe Jr. was born in Rotterdam on December 20th 1803 and died in Schoonhoven on September 22nd 1862. He was the son of the Rotterdam silversmith Jean George Grebe Sr. (1778-1865) and Cornelia Maria Knuijstingh (1782-1837). His maternal grandfather, Cornelis Knuijstingh, was a silversmith in Rotterdam. Jean George Grebe Jr. was trained in goldsmith's art. He married twice in 1830 to Maria Johanna Pieternella van den Broek and in 1853 to Francina Snoeck. From 1843 Jean George Grebe Jr. was working with silversmith Leendert Glazener and the company under the name "Grebe and Glazener" was formed. Grebe made crockery, tobacco boxes, ink sets, cutlery and other silverware. Examples of his work include the book cover for the Steigerse Church (1846) and a vase, made available by Prince Willem as a prize in a sailing competition (1847). In addition to his own work, Grebe also made designs for Grebe and Knuijstingh, the business of his father. In 1849, Jean George Grebe Jr. independently, with a new studio on the Lombardstraat. Grebe participated in the world exhibitions, the Great Exhibition in London (1851) and the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in New York (1853-1854). In the latter he won a silver medal for his "masterfully crafted silver cup". He also showed this cup at the Exposition Universelle in Paris (1855). Later he moved to the silver town of Schoonhoven, where he also died at the age of 58.
