Description

Seated in meditation on a lotus throne above a hexagonal molded base on six low feet. The right hand lies in bhumisparsha mudra on his knee, the left in dhyana mudra in his lap. A long inscription on the base. Gilding rubbed. The long inscription o reads: Zhou fu yu bao si en, ming gong zhu zao fo xiang, yi yang wu qian si shi ba zun, ju yong huang jin du zhi, suo yi guang chen gong yang, chong jing ru lai, ji xiang ru yi zhe. hong wu bing zi si yue ji ri shi. In English translation: Zhoufu, with the intention of repaying the Four Kindnesses (of mother, father, Tathagata and the teaching of the Doctrine), ordered the craftsmen to cast Buddha images, 5054 of one kind. In total, gold and (silver?) are used to continue spreading the Law, donated on an auspicious day of the 4th month in the bingzi year of the Hongwu era (1396). While most translations of the inscription state that Zhou Fu commissioned this group of Buddha images, the interpretation of this inscription on a figure in the Palace Museum in Beijing ( indicates that Zhoufu is an abbreviation of the term Zhou Wangfu and refers to the residence of the Prince of Zhou, Zhu Su (1361-1425), the 5th son of Emperor Hongwu ( According to the above source, it is Prince Zhu Su who commissioned this group of figures. The same inscription can be found on numerous other such small Buddha figures. They repeatedly appear on the art market, most recently at Sotheby's, Hong Kong, 3.10.2018, lot 3687. Kunsthaus Lempertz also offered such a figure on 30.11./1.12.1990, lot 237. The group shares a common style. The facial features are severe, the eyes are formed as narrow slits beneath slightly arched brows. The full, small mouth is no wider than the nostrils. The curls of hair are punched in rings. The robe falls in even folds. However, the images differ in small details, e. g. the hairline above the forehead is sometimes straight, sometimes in a slight curve and the shape of the hands can also be different. The inscription is engraved in varying places: on the pedestal and on the back or the reverse of the lotus. The gilding shows varying degrees of abrasion. The same donor also had 48 standing figures of Amitabha Buddha (height 23 cm) cast in the same year 1396. One of these is now in the British Museum (cf. W. Zwalf, Buddhism in Art and Faith, London 1985, p. 208, catalogue no. 300).
