Description

Seated in padmasana on a double lotus throne, with his hands at his chest in the dharma teaching gesture. He wears finely detailed monastic robes in a patchwork style, with the borders adorned with delicate incised ornaments. Along his shoulders rise two floral tendrils, supporting a flaming sword and a book. The tranquil look on his face is accentuated by the simplicity of his hairstyle and the perfect oval contour of his head. Remains of pigments on the face. Heavy cast. Undoubtedly one of the most important spiritual leaders in the history of Tibetan Buddhism, Jé Tsongkhapa Lozang Drakpa (1357–1419) was born on the northeastern border of the Amdo region of Tibet (modern Qinghai). He traveled to Tsang at a young age to pursue religious teachings, where he learned from teachers of different Buddhist traditions, developing a special connection to the Kadam School. Over time, Tsongkhapa became a renowned and influential teacher. In 1409, he organized the establishment of a major festival in Lhasa, Monlam, celebrating Buddha Shakyamuni and all great teachers. That same year, he founded the Ganden Monastery to the east of the city, later called Genden ("virtuous"). This name later inspired the name of the tradition that would develop from Tsongkhapa's teachings: Gelugpa— the "Virtuous Ones." Together with the Drepung (1416) and Sera (1419) monasteries, it would become immensely influential, and these would later be known as the largest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. A powerful Mongolian leader of his time and a descendant of Kublai Khan, Altan Khan (1507–1582), in search of a way to secure his political position, chose the Gelug school to establish Tibetan Buddhism in his territories. He called the abbot of the Drepung Monastery, Sonam Gyatso, to assist him in this mission and, in recognition of his contribution, bestowed upon him the title of "Dalai Lama." One of his tulku lineage predecessors, a student of Tsongkhapa, Gedun Drupa, posthumously received the title of the 1st Dalai Lama.
