A FINE WOOD NETSUKE FROM THE KYOGEN PLAY UTSUBO-ZARU (THE MONKEY’S QUIVER)

Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Finely carved as two actors from the Noh drama interlude Utsubo-zaru which follows the story of a saruhiki (monkey showman) and his beloved pet monkey. Both actors depicted crouching, the child actor with a saru-mask covering his face, as he imitates the mannerism of a primate. He is accompanied by the showman, dressed in voluminous robes incised with geometric motif, the actor lovingly embracing his pet, acknowledging its imminent demise, a gohei strapped to his back. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and natural imperfections. The signed tablet lost.
Provenance: From the private collection of Armand Basi. A copy of the collector’s notes, no. 745, noting the signature ‘Minkoku IV’ accompanies this lot. Armand Basi (1924-2009) was a Spanish businessman and fashion designer, co-founder of the fashion firm bearing his name. He was a Japanese art enthusiast and amassed a large collection of netsuke in his lifetime. In 1948, along with his brother Josep, Armand Basi founded a small knitting company inspired by their mother Mercé Sabi's knitted sweaters. By the end of the 1950s the business had expanded into a large textiles company, opening a factory on Balcells Street in Barcelona in 1958. In 1961–62, the Basis signed an exclusive contract with Lacoste to manufacture and distribute Lacoste products in Spain. In 1986, Basi launched his eponymous fashion brand, which produced accessories, perfume, jewelry and watches, as well as clothing in more than 400 stores across Spain, Europe, North America and Asia.

In the play Utsubo-zaru, a Lord encounters a monkey showman and asks him to sell him his monkey so that he can use the skin to make a quiver. When the showman refuses, he threatens to kill the monkey, aiming an arrow at it. The showman sadly agrees to part with his pet, and when he begins singing a farewell song to the animal, the monkey starts slowly dancing about. The daimyo is so moved by the performance that he spares the monkey's life.

‘An actor’s life starts by portraying a monkey and ends by portraying a fox.’ Embarking on the career path of a juvenile actor, most children in a kyogen family will make their debuts playing the role of the monkey in Utsubo-zaru (The Quiver Monkey). The role helps them to acquire the skill of imitation and the rhythmical sense that are important for kyogen acting. They imitate a monkey’s actions: crawling on all fours, crying, scratching themselves on the back and hips, getting rid of fleas, etc. Juvenile actors have to perform these various actions while following the flow of the story and wearing masks that restrict their field of vision. They begin their careers being watched over and trained by the performers around them, the monkey showman, therefore fulfills an important role: holding the lead attached to the monkey as they guide and control its actions while keeping it from falling from the stage.

The traditional gohei is a staff adorned with pleated paper or cloth streamers, which are usually white but may also be black, silver, gold, or other colors. The gohei is used to perform ritual purifications of individuals as well as of votive offerings and is imbued with protective powers. As a prelude to worship the gohei draws the attention of the god to the shrine and during the ritual represents the presence and power of the divinity itself.
