This simple, elegant form was one of the most frequently employed in Chinese furniture construction. Numerous variations on the form exist, including waisted and waistless examples, those with and without stretchers, and both square and side tables. Two similar but smaller tables, both with beaded aprons, were sold at The Marie Theresa L. Virata Collection of Asian Art: A Family Legacy; Christie’s New York, 16 March 2017, lot 651 (69.2 cm. wide) and Christie’s New York, 22 September 2023, lot 950 (94 cm. wide). See, also, an example with braces illustrated in N. Berliner, Beyond the Screen, Chinese Furniture of the 16th and 17th Centuries, Boston, 1996, p. 130-1.
CONDITIONS OF SALE These Conditions of Sale and the Important Notices and Explanation of Cataloguing Practice set out the terms on which we offer the lots listed in this catalogue for sale. By registering to bid and/or by bidding at auction you agree to these terms, so you should read them carefully before doing so. Unless we own a lot in whole or in part (Δ symbol), Christie’s acts as agent for the seller.
