拍品描述 翻译
Finely carved, Ushnishavijaya is depicted with three faces and eight arms, seated on a lotus pedestal. Her principal hands form the dharmachakra mudra, while her secondary arms extend outward, holding various ritual implements. Surrounding her are four diminutive figures, similarly modeled, their primary hands holding a nectar vase and a scroll. The composition is framed by an elaborate arch, centered by Garuda in high relief and flanked by Nagini, celestial beings, and makaras on either side, all beneath a central chhatri.Inscription: A horizontal inscription is neatly incised to the lower end of the frontside. It states that the present Torana was donated by Deva Singh in the years 1690-1699.Provenance: Soma Glick, Sri Asian & Primitive Art, Santa Fe, USA, 2000. Raymond Handley, Los Altos Hills, California, acquired from the above, and thence by descent to his wife Marsha Vargas Handley. A copy of the invoice from Sri Asian & Primitive Art, dated 21 September 2000, and stating a purchase price for the present lot of USD 10,000 or approx. EUR 17,000 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Raymond G. Handley (1923-2009) partnered with Ray Renault in the 1950s to co-found one of California's oldest and most successful real estate development firms. They were pioneers in shaping the early landscape of Silicon Valley, developing buildings for major tech innovators such as Intel and Raytheon, laying the groundwork for the region's transformation into a global technology hub. Raymond Handley was a keen collector of art who traveled extensively, including the most remote parts of Papua New Guinea and Africa. In Mali, where his brother served as the Ambassador of the United States, he drilled more than fifty water wells for Dogon villages. His passion led him to establish Folk Art International/Xanadu Tribal Arts, an ethnographic art business which developed into the Xanadu Gallery in the late 1990s, located in the historic Frank Lloyd Wright building off Union Square, and continued by his widow Marsha Vargas Handley until her retirement in 2015. Having opened her first gallery in the Bay Area in 1973, she is an important figure in the Asian art world in her own right, serving as the president of the International Netsuke Society for over 16 years.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, natural imperfections including fissures and age cracks, obvious losses, signs of weathering, encrustations, flaking, small chips, scattered nicks and scratches, remnants of ancient pigments.Weight: 37.7 kg (incl. stand)Dimensions: Length 125 cm (excl. stand), 134 cm (incl. stand); Height 94 cm (excl. stand), 98 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on an associated stand. (2)Torana is a Sanskrit word usually referring to the entire gateway. In Nepalese usage, however, it is primarily reserved for the upper panel. Often crafted from wood, metal, or stone, toranas are richly adorned with intricate carvings of deities, mythological figures, and auspicious symbols. The central motif commonly features a protective deity, flanked by other divine figures, while surrounding elements like floral patterns, serpents, or makaras (mythical sea creatures) add symbolic depth. This elaborate decoration reflects Nepal's artistic fusion of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Toranas hold profound spiritual significance, serving both as protective barriers against negative influences and as visual embodiments of divine blessings.Literature comparison:Compare a related carved wood Torana depicting Ganesha, dated to the 19th century, in the National Museum of Nepal.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Koller, Zurich, 6 June 2018, lot 131Price: CHF 30,500 or approx.
