Intricate designs in underglaze cobalt on a thinly potted porcelain plate. The barbed rim has a thin cobalt line on both the front and back edge. The cavetto of the dish has medallions of Daoist symbols with alternating peach branch medallions. The central well is decorated with a conch shell and is bordered by a fret work design. The back is decorated with panels in a stylized floral pattern. The shallow cut foot and base are not glazed.There is grit adhering to the foot. The glaze is thin but oh so soft. The underglaze cobalt used is that nice deep Wanli blue. The dish is hand potted. You can see the pottera€?s wheel marks on the base.There is Chinese calligraphy in black on the unglazed base.Provenance: This dish belonged to a collection from the Portland Art Museum and was deaccessioned.MEASUREMENTS 7 ??a€ (19.7 cm) diameter x 1 ??a€ (3.8 cm) tall. Weighs 9.8 oz (280 g)CONDITIONThere are glaze imperfections such as pimples, reserves, and explosion spots of black cobalt. The dish came out of the firing with a slight warp. There are no cracks, chips or breaks. The colors are bright and shiny. There is very little wear to the dish.A nice deep blue dish that has survived to the present. It will make a rich addition to a collection of blue and white.Item ID: Por-1914
