Just like metal, the wood has taken on a patina. The carving of Shou lao, is very fine. You can see it in the hairs on the head and beard. Each strand is a fine parallel line. The robe has the feel of fabric as it drapes and shows movement. The figure is holding a thinly carved scroll, which is cut away from the body. This fine carving continues in the face, which has the believability of an ancient sage. The base has the grain of the natural wood. The color of the wood is a nice deep yellow brown. The carving is dense and has weight. There are no artist marks on the base. There are Chinese characters carved into the scroll which the figure holds.
