Large, colorful very old lithograph toy in the shape of a horse with saddle that will be a great addition to an antique toy collection. The toy is most likely British.Thin tin that uses tabs to connect the two haves to make a toy in the shape of a horse. The tin is lithographed with colorful designs of a saddle, harness, dappling, and facial features. The horse stands on its own. There are tabs even on the feet.I could find no marks or labels to identify the manufacturer or date of manufacture. The lack of a mark suggests the piece was produced between 1875, when the lithograph process was invented, and 1890 when most imported toys were usually marked with the country of origin. American toys of this period often had an embossed, stenciled, or printed patent mark, which strongly suggests that this piece is from Europe a€“ most likely either Germany or the UK. Since the dimensions are fairly close to round ??a€ or 1/8a€, but odd metric numbers, we believe ita€?s likely the toy is British. When inspected under a magnifying loupe, the colors appear solid rather than as dots, which helps confirm the age and authenticity. The seams have square corners, also supports the piece being from this time period.MEASUREMENTS 10 ??a€ (27.3 cm) long x 8 ??a€ (22.2 cm) tall x 2 1/8a€ (2.1 cm) wide. Weighs 6.1 oz (175 g)CONDITION There are some scratches and color loss, and not all the tabs fit tight. The greatest wear is on the saddle and on the rump. Someone has reinforced the toy by wrapping old string near the saddle to keep it together. There is very little rust on the toy; the only place I could find any was on the bottom tabs.A large tin horse toy that has survived to today. It must have been cherished and played with. Ita€?s amazing.Item ID: A-1906
