A busy over the top blue and white unusual shaped charger with an intricate design of shi shi lions playing with a ball. You want Japanese design, well here it is.A large square porcelain charger. There is a slightly raised, flared, foliate rim. The octagonal central well has four longs and four short ones. The potting is heavy and the base white glaze has a slightly bluish tint. Under glaze cobalt blue stencils were used to decorate the piece. The stenciling is very good with few losses and smudges. The rim design is of prunus blossoms, flying birds with central medallions of landscapes and calligraphy centralized in each border segment. In each corners of the rim is a cartouche containing calligraphy. The central medallion is of shi shi lions playing with a ball in a garden. The central medallion is bordered by an ornate band with dragons and chrysanthemums. The back is decorated with cobalt rings around the foot and base. Coin and ribbons have been stenciled on the bottom. The piece is hand-potted and you can see the pottera€?s wheel marks under the glaze on the base. The glaze feels smooth and thin. There are no porcelain marks or labels.MEASUREMENTS 11 1/8a€ ( 28.2 cm) square x 1 ??a€ (7.1 cm) tall. Weighs 2 lbs 5.1 oz (1.05 kg)CONDITION There are no cracks or breaks and the charger rings like a bell. The underside of the rim has wear and tiny rim chips, but they are not noticeable. There are a few wear scratches on the central panel that are not extensive or noticeable. What an imaginative tour de force. It has every design going for it; shape, decorations, and color. I love this piece.Item ID: Por-957
