Matched pair of Staffordshire poodle dogs with little ceramic frit used to simulate fur in the traditional poodle clip.Low fired ceramic molded poodle dogs that were made as a pair. Each dog faces forward with the chests facing forward. The backs are finished but would face the back of the mantle. They have an off white glaze and over this has been sprinkled glazed white chips (or frits) to simulate the doga€?s poodle fur. The doga€?s faces are painted in black, red for the mouth and yellow for the eyes. The painting is fast and crude but has a rustic charm. The feet are painted gray with black claws. As an added touch, gold has been used to paint the collar and lock. There are small single holes on the base for firing. One base still has a piece of maroon felt. The glaze on the base matches the rest of the body. Both dogs are stamped in black on the base with the words; STAFFORDSHIRE WARE ENGLAND . In the center of the words is a Staffordshire knot, used by Staffordshire potters for over a hundred years. There is a production number 30 with an exclamation mark in black to one side on the base. Both bases have the same production number.I believe these figures are from the early 20th Century. The gold in the gold collar is brighter than is typical in 19th century versions, but the pieces were made press molds rather than slip molds, as is typical with later pieces. Also you can make out a mold lines on their backs. Also the stamp is consistent with a€?Staffordshirea€ ceramics produced outside the Staffordshire proper. At least the eyes, mouth and whiskers painted by brush and have some detail, which indicates some age.MEASUREMENTS 4 ??a€ (11.4 cm) tall x 3a€ (7.6 cm) wide x 2 1/8a€ (5.4 cm) deep. Weighs 15 lb 4 oz (435 g)CONDITION There are a few glaze imperfections like black spots, dimples and bumps. These are very tiny and you dona€?t notice them. There is a large chip on one poodlea€?s back foot. There are no other chips, cracks, or breaks. The left poodle has a small bare area of the fur by the lock. The rest of the fur is in good shape. The foot ring has little wear, but thata€?s to be expected since the bottoms were covered by felt, which largely protected the pieces from wear. The felt piece the remains shows wear.A fun well matched pair of old ceramic English poodles that will grace your home, but wona€?t require expensive haircuts to maintain the poodle clip!___________________Item ID: Pot-1691
