Description: Wood, lacquer, gilding, glass inlay. Burma, 19th century
Very impressive and elaborate five-part altar. Lacquered in a layer of black and then red with leaf gold applied and partially rubbed away after time. The multi-stepped base with large amounts of glass inlay, leads to the square section where presumably an adored Buddhist sculpture would be placed. Around this square section, a rectangular, tapered panel with glass inlay and gold-lacquered swirling leaves.
