Description: Wood, lacquer and gilding. Burma, 20th century
A Hamsa bird is standing on a two-tier base with another, smaller one on its back. The bird is often identified with the Supreme Spirit and is the vahana (mount) of Sarasvati and Brahma. In Burma, this mythological goose is also called Hintha. The base and both Hamsa are densely decorated with a thayo relief and lacquer-gilt. The lower part of the base is rectangular, while the upper part is bowl-shaped. Both birds have inlaid eyes, spread wings and flame-like tails.
