A blue and white porcelain vase and cover, decorated with scenes, auspicious symbols, and flowers within shaped cartouches
China, Qing dynasty, Kangxi period (1662-1722)
(h. cm 36)
(defects)
This elegant baluster vase, surmounted by its domed cover with finial, is finely painted in vibrant cobalt blue tones characteristic of early Kangxi blue-and-white wares. The decoration, arranged within shaped panels, alternates between landscapes, floral compositions, and emblematic objects drawn from the "Hundred Antiques" (baibao) motif, a popular theme celebrating refinement, scholarship, and good fortune. The balanced layout and precise brushwork demonstrate the painter?s skill in combining decorative harmony with symbolic depth.
Porcelains of this type were produced both for the domestic market and for export, particularly to Europe, where Kangxi blue-and-white was highly prized for its purity of glaze, brilliance of cobalt, and lively artistic expression. The period marked a revival of porcelain production at Jingdezhen following the disruptions of the late Ming, leading to some of the most technically accomplished and aesthetically sophisticated wares of the Qing dynasty. Export examples such as this were often acquired by European collectors and merchants, influencing the taste and design of Western ceramics throughout the 17th and 18th centuries.
