Description

A Huanghuali Brush Pot (Bitong) China, Qing Dynasty (1644–1911)
Height: 15 cm (5.9 inches) - Diameter: 12.5 cm (4.9 inches)
This brush pot (bitong) is a quintessential piece of Chinese scholar’s studio furniture, prized for the beauty of its material and its pure, restrained form. It is a striking example of the Qing aesthetic, where the inherent qualities of the wood were prioritized over elaborate surface decoration.
The brush pot is carved from a single, thick section of Huanghuali wood (Dalbergia odorifera), one of the most highly coveted hardwoods in Chinese furniture history. The vessel follows a classic, plain cylindrical form with perfectly vertical sides and a slightly recessed base. The value of the bitong lies entirely in its material properties, which are beautifully displayed: The wood exhibits a rich, warm, reddish-brown tone and a smooth, lustrous surface.
The natural grain is highly figured, featuring undulating patterns that give the appearance of rippling silk. "Ghost Faces": The piece showcases distinctive "ghost face" knots (or gui lian)—the coveted circular or oval patterns created by the growth rings around a branch junction. These are visible as darker, swirling marks that heighten the visual interest of the exterior surface. The interior and base are smoothly finished. The underside features a circular hole which has been later filled with a wooden plug. Such holes are occasionally found on pieces of wood that have suffered shrinkage or been repurposed, but here the repair is discreet and minor, allowing the focus to remain on the wood's exterior beauty.
Bitong made from Huanghuali were symbols of refinement and intellectual status, essential tools used by the literati for holding writing brushes. Their clean lines and reliance on the material's natural beauty perfectly reflect the high-minded simplicity idealized by the scholar-gentry class (shidafu) during the Qing Dynasty.
