Description

A Carved Hardwood Scholar's Dragon Box China, Qing Dynasty, 18th–19th Century
Length: 38 cm (15.0 inches)
Deeply carved dark hardwood (likely Zitan, Zitan-mu or heavily stained Hongmu).
This rectangular box (he or xiang) is an exceptional piece of Chinese decorative art, intended for the most discerning scholar or high-ranking official. Its subject matter, quality of carving, and material selection confirm its status as a luxury item. The box is of a sophisticated, elongated rectangular form with a closely fitted lid. Its size and shape suggest it was used in a scholar's studio (zhaungshang) for st probably storing painting materials (such as brushes or ink sticks), or official documents. The dark wood has been polished to a deep, lustrous patina. The lid is the focal point, featuring exceptional high-relief carving;
The design prominently displays two powerful, five-clawed dragons (long), the symbol reserved exclusively for the Emperor or high-ranking officials specifically granted the privilege. The dragons are shown dramatically chasing the Sacred Pearl (zhu) the flaming jewel representing wisdom, spiritual power, and the emperor's mandate amidst turbulent swirling clouds (yun).
This motif is highly auspicious and visually dynamic. The deep relief carving showcases the artisan's skill, with the dragons' scales, claws, and sinuous bodies standing out sharply against the cloud background. The border framing the main carving is cleverly executed, meticulously carved in imitation of bamboo segments. Bamboo (zhu) is a traditional symbol of resilience and upright character (a Confucian virtue), thus adding another layer of meaning suitable for the scholar class. The sides of the box are similarly adorned with cloud motifs in lower relief, maintaining the celestial atmosphere established on the lid.The use of the five-clawed dragon strongly implies this box was commissioned for, or gifted to, someone with close imperial ties. The high quality of the carving and the prestige of the material (dark hardwood) reflect the sophisticated and exacting tastes of the Qing Dynasty court.
