H :8cm W :17cm This Ming Xuande Blue-and-White Basin-Shaped Washer with Sea-Water Dragon Pattern is a fine blue-and-white scholar’s utensil of the Xuande period. It takes the basin form with a constricted mouth, bulging belly and flat base, made of solid heavy body with white moist blue-tinted glaze. The body is decorated with blue-and-white sea-water dragon patterns: the dragon is vigorous and powerful, and the sea-water patterns are layered and turbulent; the blue-and-white color is balanced in shade ("five shades of ink"), and the rim is adorned with scroll patterns, fully demonstrating the Xuande blue-and-white feature of "majestic momentum and superb painting". Natural usage traces are visible on the body, a typical state in the circulation of ancient wares, and it remains a fine scholar’s washer of the Ming Dynasty.
