Description

A GROUP OF NINE ASIAN ART AND CULTURE REFERENCE BOOKS
Comprising Sir Algernon Tudor-Craig, Armorial Porcelain of the Eighteenth Century, Published by The Century House, London, 1925; From East to West: The Quest for Chinese Export Porcelain with Western Themes (1695 - 1815); The Oton Diggings; H. Ling Roth, Oriental Silver Work: Malay and Chinese; Edward F. Strange, Chinese Lacquer; Celestial Silks: Chinese Religious and Court Textiles; Little China: The Annamese Lands; G. F. Hudson, Europe and China

PROVENANCE:
Collection of Mr. Trevor Morris, ACT.

The collector's journey began with an early friendship with a Chinese medical practitioner, whose consultations often evolved into long and animated discussions on the subtle qualities of Song dynasty glazes. These formative exchanges ignited a lifelong passion for Chinese ceramics.

At the time, the collector's professional life involved preparing horses for sale and travelling frequently to Europe and the United States. Hours spent waiting for flights were put to good use scouring antique shops in London and New York, with New England proving to be an especially fertile ground for Chinese porcelain.

Through experience, the importance of provenance became clear. Aware of the difficulties of correct attribution, the collector consistently sought advice and acquired works through recognised experts. In Australia, where opportunities to handle large quantities of Chinese porcelain are limited, developing the necessary "feel" can be challenging. To address this, the collector also studied broken porcelain, which appears on the market at a fraction of the cost of complete examples and offers invaluable insight into structure, glaze, and firing.

Over a period of 45 years, and within the constraints of a modest budget, mistakes were inevitably made. Yet each misstep became a lesson, contributing to a deeper understanding of this endlessly fascinating material record of the past.
