OTHER NOTES:
Liang Shiqiu (1903-1987)

Liang Shiqiu (also romanized Liang Shih-ch'iu) was born in Beijing in 1903 and passed away in Taipei, Taiwan, on November 3, 1987.

Educated first at Tsinghua College in Beijing, he continued his studies in the United States - graduating from Colorado College and later undertaking graduate studies at Columbia and Harvard, where he was deeply influenced by the critic Irving Babbitt and adopted a classical humanist literary outlook.

On returning to China in the mid-1920s, he helped found the Crescent Moon Society (1927) along with other leading intellectuals, advocating for literature's aesthetic and humanistic value rather than political propaganda.

He taught English literature at several distinguished institutions, including a tenure at Peking University (1934-1937).
After 1949 he relocated to Taiwan, where he taught at Taiwan Normal University until his retirement in 1966.

Among his many achievements, Liang is most celebrated as the first person to translate the complete works of William Shakespeare into Chinese - a monumental project completed over decades.

In addition to his translation work, Liang was a prolific essayist and literary critic. His essay collections - most famously under the title From a Cottager's Sketchbook - blend elegant prose, subtle humor, and humanistic reflection on everyday life, and have enjoyed enduring popularity.

Throughout his life, Liang remained a powerful advocate for literature rooted in human nature, reason, and aesthetic value. His scholarship, translation, and literary output helped bridge Western and Chinese literatures and significantly shaped modern Chinese literary culture.
