Zhuang Yan (1899 -1980), style name Shangyan, also known as Muling and Yuweng, was born in Jiangsu province and later settled in Beiping (Beijing). A leading scholar-artist of modern China, he was a renowned calligrapher, art historian, educator, and poet, celebrated for his refined literati spirit. He served in various cultural posts, most notably as Deputy Director of the National Palace Museum in Taipei.

After graduating from the Department of Philosophy at Peking University in 1924, Zhuang joined the Qing Imperial Artifacts Administration, the forerunner of the Palace Museum, and in 1926 became Head of the Antiquities Department. In 1931 he co-founded the Yuantai Seal Society in Beijing with Wang Fu?ˉan and Tai Jingnong. During the War of Resistance, he was entrusted with escorting the Palace Museum treasures through southern China, and in late 1948 accompanied the collection to Taiwan. He retired in 1969, having devoted forty-five years of service to the Palace Museum, of which he proudly said, ?°To serve one cause from beginning to end is no small thing.?±Through his work he had rare access to masterpieces of Tang and Song calligraphy, and he particularly admired Emperor Huizong's Shoujin (Slender Gold) script. By blending elements of Xue Ji and Chu Suiliang, his own style is distinguished by rounded turns, graceful yet powerful structure, and an elegant balance of strength and softness.

Zhuang once wrote that his two lifelong regrets were never seeing the Sanxitang model calligraphies reunited, and never witnessing the Taiwan-relocated treasures return to their homeland. Clad all his life in a scholar's long gown, he moved through the world of ancient calligraphy and painting with detachment from fame and gain, embodying a noble cultural purity that resonates in his Slender Gold calligraphy.
