拍品描述 翻译
AN OPENWORK DOUBLE-TIER BRONZE MIRROR, JIACENG JING, WARRING STATES PERIODExpert's note:The alloy composition — Cu 73%, Sn 25%, Pb 2% — corresponds to a high-tin bronze. Such a formulation is consistent with ancient Chinese mirror production, as an elevated tin content of 25% produces a harder surface capable of achieving a finer and thus more reflective polish. The relatively low lead content suggests that fluidity during casting was not prioritized to the same extent as surface hardness and optical performance.China, 4th-3rd century. The reverse is finely cast with an inner openwork plate depicting four pairs of addorsed long-tailed birds oriented toward a central quatrefoil enclosing the knop. Their intertwined bodies are enriched with precise incision work, all contained within a square frame further embellished with scrolling ornament. The obverse retains a fine, even polish.Provenance: From a private collection in Southern Germany, assembled since the 1950s and thence by descent in the family. Condition: Good condition with ancient wear, casting irregularities, traces of corrosion, tiny nicks, few small chips, shallow surface scracthes, expected old repairs. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown patina with malachite encrustation.Weight: 1.3 kg Dimensions: Size 20.9 x 20.8 cmThe craft of mirror-making flourished during the Warring States period, when bronzes increasingly functioned as markers of personal status and refined taste rather than solely as ritual implements. The reverse sides of mirrors from this era display a remarkable range of ornament, often closely related to motifs seen on contemporary jades, lacquer wares, and textiles—luxury materials that circulated among elite patrons. This large square example belongs to the rare double-cast type, known as a layered or “double-tier” mirror (jiaceng jing). It is typically constructed in two distinct components: a reflective part with a central knob on the reverse, overlaid with an openwork register of birds, serpents, or related motifs. The pierced sections would originally have contrasted either with a different alloy visible beneath or with lacquer applied to the ground, while the individual cells were sometimes inlaid with vividly colored hardstones, creating a rich interplay of texture, material, and light.Literature comparison:Compare two closely related bronze square openwork mirrors dated to the Warring States period, one with four dragons and the other of slightly more abstract-geometric design and inlaid in gold, silver, turquoise, size 18.5 cm square, in the Shanghai Museum.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 16 September 2010, lot 879 Price: USD 15,000 or approx. EUR 19,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : An unusual bronze square openwork mirror back, middle/late Warring States period, 4th-3rd century BC Expert remark: Compare the closely related form, manner of casting, openwork, and bird motif. Note the smaller size (11 cm), missing mirror front, and that this lot comprises second bronze mirror.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams London, 12 May 2008, lot 211Price: GBP 6,000 or approx.
