拍品描述 翻译
A SILVER-INLAID BRONZE CROSSBOW SUPPORT, WARRING STATES PERIODChina, 475-221 BC. Finely cast, the rectangular socket of the bow support gently tapering to form the slender neck of a stylized dragon head, meticulously inlaid in silver sheet and wire with scrolling clouds and dragons.Provenance: From a Japanese private collection.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, casting irregularities, signs of burial, encrustations, areas of corrosion, light warping, minute losses to inlays, few small dents. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina with areas of malachite encrustation.Weight: 362.4 gDimensions: Length 20.5 cmRecent archaeological excavations in China have clarified the original function of these superbly decorated objects. A pair of inlaid bronze fittings was discovered in 1972 in a Warring States period horse pit at Zhongzhou Road, Luoyang, Henan Province. The mounts were found to the left of a chariot, positioned on either side of a wooden shaft equipped with a crossbow mechanism and adorned with an inlaid bronze butt ornament. The archaeological context strongly suggests that such pairs of fittings formed part of a crossbow mounted on the chariot frame and served to secure the arms of the weapon. The exceptional care and costly materials invested in these objects attest to the increasing importance of luxury accoutrements during the Zhou dynasty, a period in which personal items began to rival bronze ritual vessels as vehicles of display and status. For a detailed comparison of the decorative style of these early Chinese crossbow fittings and a discussion of their earliest appearance in ancient China, see Thomas Lawton, Chinese Art of the Warring States Period: Change and Continuity, 480-220 BC, 1982, p. 66-67.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related silver-inlaid bronze crossbow support, Warring States period, 3rd century BC, 21.8 cm long, in the Cleveland Art Museum, accession number 1947.3. Compare a pair of silver-inlaid bronze crossbow mounts, late Eastern Zhou dynasty, 8th-3th century BC, 19.7 cm long, in the Brooklyn Museum, accession number 71.118.1a-b.
