Description: Hattori Tadasaburo (Died 1939), A Large 'Bamboo' Cloisonné Enamel Vase, Early 20th Century 日本 江户/明治时期 服部忠三郎 '竹'纹七宝烧大瓶 Decorated in silver wire with a thick bamboo stalk beside a slender stalk, reserved on a celadon-green ground, the reverse left plain, applied with copper rims, the base with an incised 'Hattori' 服部 in a leaf-shaped reserve height 11.9 in — 30.3 cm Estimate: $4,000—6,000 CAD Provenance: Purchased in Winnipeg, MB, in the early 1980s Dimensions: height 11.9 in — 30.3 cm Notes: Hattori Tadasaburo was among the most accomplished cloisonné enamelling artists working in Nagoya at the turn of the twentieth century. Trained under Tsukamoto Jin’emon, he established his own studio in 1888 and quickly gained recognition for the refinement and sophistication of his work. His enamels received medals at major international exhibitions, including Chicago (1893), St. Louis (1904), and Liège (1905), and were notably exhibited in Fine Arts sections rather than industrial displays. Appointed a Manufacturer to the Imperial Household, Hattori was admired by contemporaries for his sensitive use of colour and exceptional control of subtle tonal shading, particularly in floral and naturalistic compositions. In his later work, floral motifs are often rendered in a more simplified, modern idiom, reflecting contemporary European influences that sit comfortably between Art Nouveau and early Art Deco aesthetics.
