拍品描述 翻译
A CARVED WOOD HAND OF FATIMA, HAMSA, INDIA, 19TH CENTURYThe wood plaque is of upright hand-shaped form, the palm surmounted by five fingers. The surface is densely carved in relief with concentric roundels of Indian calligraphy, the central medallion is encircled by bands of script and smaller round cartouches, while the fingers are similarly filled with vertical panels of inscriptions. The thumb and outer edge curve outward.Inscription: To the front, inscribed with the names of the holy family and their sons.Provenance: Collection of Herbert Tichy, thence by descent. Herbert Tichy (1912-1987) was an Austrian geologist, explorer, and travel writer whose long engagement with Asia shaped both his travels and his collecting. In the 1930s, he traveled overland from Europe to India and Tibet, at times disguised as a pilgrim, immersing himself in local cultures and religious life — experiences he later described in a series of influential travel accounts. His decades of exploration in the Himalayas and across South and East Asia culminated in the first ascent of Cho Oyu in 1954, securing his place among the leading explorers of the 20th century. Tichy's writings reflect a close attention to Buddhist culture and everyday life, suggesting a collector driven not only by curiosity, but by sustained personal engagement.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, obvious losses, small chips, tiny nicks. The wood with a fine, naturally grown, dark patina.Weight 375 gDimensions: Height 22 cmThe back with two nails and a string for mounting. The hamsa (Hand of Fatima) is a widely apotropaic symbol used across the Islamic world, North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of South Asia, serving as a protective device against the evil eye. While strongly associated with Islam—particularly through Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad—it is also used in Jewish traditions (as the Hand of Miriam) and reflects a broader, shared Mediterranean belief system in protective hand symbolism. In regions such as the Deccan in India, hamsa forms were adapted into talismanic plaques and processional objects, often inscribed with Qur'anic verses and magical formulae, combining local artistic traditions with Islamic devotional practices. Its widespread use across cultures underscores its role not as a strictly religious symbol, but as a cross-cultural emblem of protection.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's London, 10 October 2014, lot 68 Price: GBP 4,000 or approx.
