A PENDE PAINTED WOOD RITUAL MASK, MBUYA, FIRST HALF OF 20TH CENTURYExternal Expert Authentication: This lot was authenticated by Prof. Erwin Melchardt, who confirms the attribution and dating above. A copy of Prof. Melchardt's expertise written for Dorotheum, Vienna, 9 June 2016, lot 93, accompanies this lot. Erwin Melchardt is an Austrian journalist, art critic, and internationally recognized expert in non-European art, particularly African and Oceanic art. A passionate collector with a collection of around 4,000 objects, he became one of Austria's leading specialists in the field. His work includes sourcing, authenticating, valuing, and cataloguing objects for international auctions, as well as lecturing on non-European art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. He also compiled the catalog of the Leopold Museum's collection of African and Oceanic works, contributing to research and exhibitions exploring the relationship between European modernism and non-European artistic traditions.Democratic Republic of the Congo. The visage vigorously carved, distinguished by markedly slit eyes set beneath gently arched brows and a pronounced forehead centered by a circular lunar motif, often associated with peaceful female imagery. A projecting nose with broad nostrils emerges between the scarified cheeks, above a gaping mouth revealing serrated dentition, flanked on either side by small ears. The head surmounted by a dense coiffure composed of vegetal fibers dyed black and framed overall by a similar woven structure of plaited raffia.Provenance: The collection of Inge Bienenstein, Vienna, Austria, thence by descent within the family. Dorotheum, Vienna, 9 June 2016, lot 93, starting price EUR 1,600 or approx. EUR 2,200 (adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. A copy of a certificate from Bienenstein Gallery accompanies the lot. Ingeborg Bienenstein (d. 2013) was the founder and director of Bienenstein Gallery, which she started in 1978 in Vienna, Austria. The gallery held several exhibitions each year, displaying fine antiques and works of art from Asia, Africa, and Oceania in context with modern art and design from Europe. This approach aimed at showcasing a universal language of art and the fact that art from all around the world can be connected in a meaningful way.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear, traces of use, expected rubbing to pigments. Good, lustrous patina.Weight: 1,045 g (excl. stand), 2,118 g (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 34 cm (excl. stand), 46.5 cm (incl. stand)The large Pende population is broadly divided into two principal groups: the Western Pende and the Eastern Pende. Both communities inhabit regions near the Angolan border and in proximity to the Chokwe, resulting in stylistic affinities and frequent overlap in artistic traditions. The Western Pende, established in the Kwilu region, are particularly renowned for their Mbuya masks, exemplified by the present work. Originally, such masks were associated with rituals accompanying circumcision and initiation ceremonies. Over time, however, their function evolved toward more theatrical and performative contexts. Most Pende masks bear specific names that indicate their gender, meaning, and function. Nevertheless, it is rarely possible to identify a Pende mask in isolation, as its full significance emerges only in conjunction with its costume and associated dance.Mbuya masks also served as prototypes for pendant masks, which reproduced their forms on a smaller scale. These pendants functioned as personal emblems, commemorating the courage and successful completion of initiation rites of their wearers. See Joseph Cornet, Art of Africa: Treasures from the Congo, 1971, p. 100-110.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Pende mask, dated late 19th to early 20th century, 24.5 cm high, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 2002.27.17.
