A NSAPO WOOD POWER FIGURE, LATE 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURYDemocratic Republic of the Congo. Boldly carved, standing in a classic Buanga posture, with flat feet, slightly flexed legs, and pronounced buttocks, on a slightly inclined rounded pedestal. The arms held close to the torso with the hands supporting a prominently swollen abdomen, centrally pierced at the navel. The oversized head, supported by an elongated neck, bearing mask-like facial features, including almond-shaped, slit eyes, a triangular nose, and a wide mouth with full lips, framed by rounded ears.Provenance: Collection of Rut van Caelenbergh, Brussels, Belgium. The collection of Inge Bienenstein, Vienna, Austria, acquired from the above and thence by descent within the family. A certificate from Bienenstein Gallery, confirming the attribution above, accompanies the lot. Rut van Caelenbergh is a recognized art dealer and connoisseur specializing in tribal art. In 1995, she founded her gallery in the Sablon district of Brussels, focusing primarily on African and Oceanic art, thereby contributing to the visibility and appreciation of these artistic traditions within the European art market. Beyond her work as a gallerist, she is also known in Flanders for her participation in the television programme 'Rijker dan je denkt' [Richer than you think], a format comparable to the well-known BBC British programme Antiques Roadshow, in which her expertise in evaluating cultural and material heritage is prominently featured. Ingeborg Bienenstein (d. 2013) was the founder and director of Bienenstein Gallery, which she started in 1978 in Vienna, Austria. The gallery held several exhibitions each year, displaying fine antiques and works of art from Asia, Africa, and Oceania in context with modern art and design from Europe. This approach aimed at showcasing a universal language of art and the fact that art from all around the world can be connected in a meaningful way.Condition: Good condition with expected wear, minor age cracks, traces of weathering, few small nicks, light surface scratches, little flaking, few minute chips. The wood with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina.Weight: 1.8 kg (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 46.4 cm (excl. stand), 51.7 cm (incl. stand)The figure adorned with two necklaces of cylindrical white and blue beads, strung on small cords. With an associated wood stand. (2)Power figures such as the present example were central to the ritual and political life of the Nsapo, formerly known as the Zappo-Zapp, a subgroup of the Songye peoples of east-central Democratic Republic of the Congo. Like other Songye communities spread across the region between the Sankuru and Lubilash rivers to the west and the Lualaba River to the east, the Nsapo used these figures—commonly referred to as nkishi—as intermediaries between ancestral spirits and the living. Intended to safeguard and benefit the wider community, nkishi were collective spiritual objects rather than the property of any single individual. The creation of an nkishi was a public and highly collaborative process involving the community, an accomplished carver, and a ritual specialist known as a nganga. Chiefs and elders typically commissioned the figure, while responsibility for selecting and cutting the tree rested with the community. Both the sculptor and the nganga were required to possess recognized expertise and spiritual authority. The nganga determined the figure's specific attributes and selected the wood, often chosen for its medicinal, symbolic, or protective qualities, as well as its ancestral associations.Once completed and ritually empowered, the nkishi was housed in a dedicated enclosure situated in an important communal space, such as the center of the village or near the residence of a chief. A designated guardian cared for the figure and served as its interpreter, as communications from the nkishi were believed to be conveyed through dreams, divination, or spirit possession.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Nsapo wood power female figure, Congo, dated 1910 or earlier, 20 cm high, in the British Museum, registration number Af1913,0520.5.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's Paris, 30 November 2021, lot 176 Mid-Estimate: EUR 21,500 or approx.
