拍品描述 翻译
A THANGKA OF VAJRADHARA AND THE EIGHTY-FOUR MAHASIDDHAS, TIBET, 19TH-20TH CENTURYThe thangka depicts the Primordial Buddha, Vajradhara (Dorjechang), peaceful in appearance, blue in color, with an attractive face, he has the two hands folded across the heart in the gesture of non-duality. The right hand holds a vajra scepter and the left a vajra-handled bell. Beautifully adorned with a five-pointed crown of gold. With gold jewels, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets and a girdle, he wears an upper garment of green. The lower body is attired in a red and blue skirt trimmed with green. Seated in vajra posture with the legs interlocked atop a moon disc and multi-colored lotus and white snow lion supported throne.Surrounding the central figure arranged in registers are the individualized portraits of the powerful Eighty-Four Mahasiddhas according to the system of Vajrasana.Provenance: Woolley & Wallis, Salisbury, 22 May 2019, lot 782. The collection of Kristen Tomassi and Axel Dieter Ball, Mallorca, Spain. Kristen Tomassi, an architect and designer based in Mallorca, was married early in her life to Richard Branson, who was already rising to prominence with Virgin Records. Her enduring partnership was with German entrepreneur and architect Axel Dieter Ball (1942-2026), with whom she co-founded La Residencia in Deià in 1984. The hotel, a family-run haven celebrating art and music, helped shape the luxury hotel scene of Mallorca, where the couple spent most of their lives together until Axel sadly passed away this year. Together, they built an impressive collection of Himalayan art throughout the 1980s and 1990s, purchasing pieces from renowned dealers and auction houses including Rossi & Rossi, David Tremayne, Annapurna, Sotheby's, and Christie's. Objects formerly in their collection have been exhibited by the Museum of Asian Art, Hong Kong, and the Art Institute of Chicago, featuring also in the exhibition catalog by Pratapaditya Pal et al., Himalayas - An Aesthetic Adventure (2003).Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Little flaking to pigments and gilt, light creasing and folds, and minuscule stains. The mounting well-preserved overall, one wooden roller broken.Dimensions: Image size 55 x 42.5 cm, Size incl. frame 100 x 71 cmThe backrest displays on each side at the bottom left and right elephants supporting a blue-hose antelope with a small child riding on the back. At the sides of the throne stand two bodhisattva figures. On the right side of Vajradhara is Maitreya, on the left is Manjushri. Both are peaceful in appearance and fully adorned with ornaments and silks, they hold the hands at the heart in the gesture of Dharma Teaching.Mounted on silk brocade.Vajradhara, the Adi-Buddha, is revered as the primordial source from which all wisdom and compassion arise. The Sarma schools of Tibetan Buddhism regard him as the precursor of all spiritual lineages. In his calm and composed form, Vajradhara embodies the blissful state that follows the realization of the dharma, presenting his body both as a focus for meditative contemplation and as an object of devotional appreciation. The Nyingma school sees Vajradhara as an emanation of Buddha Samantabhadra, while other major Tibetan Buddhist schools regard him as the secret form of Shakyamuni Buddha and the combined essence of all Buddhas of the ten directions and the three times. From Vajradhara emanate some of the most important meditational deities, including Guhyasamaja, Shri Hevajra, and Chakrasamvara.Literature comparison:Compare a related earlier thangka of Vajradhara Buddha with the 84 Mahasiddhas, Nepal, 16th century, illustrated by Jeff Watt on Himalayan Art Resources, item number 15644.
